THE BOSTON ANALYTICS CONSUMER SENTIMENT INDEX

The burgeoning Indian economy — often dubbed "India Inc." — has opened up significant growth opportunities for domestic and international businesses participating in a market that now includes a middle class numbering 300 million consumers. In this high-growth context, policymakers and businesses turn to regular assessments of consumer sentiment as leading indicators of economic conditions.

The Boston Analytics Consumer Sentiment Index (BACSI) for India is designed to indicate the level and shifts in consumer sentiment over time. Drawing inspiration from consumer sentiment indices in the developed and emerging world — including the University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Survey and the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Survey — the BACSI has been carefully adapted to the requirements and conditions of the Indian economy.

The monthly BACSI is intended to be the most frequently released consumer sentiment index by an independent research organization in India.

Systematic Disaggregation Architecture
The BACSI is based on a systematic disaggregation architecture supported by economic theory to provide an effective measurement of the level and shifts in consumer sentiment in India over time. The index is composed of two sub-indices:

  • Current Situation Index
  • Expectation Index

The BACSI also includes five derived indices covering:

  • Employment conditions
  • Inflation
  • Real estate
  • Investment
  • Consumer spending

Robust Survey Methodology
The index is derived from a monthly survey of more than 4500 respondents across various Indian cities and towns ensuring adequate geographical coverage of the country. A stratified sampling process was adopted for this with the stratas based on the socio-economic conditions of the respondents in order to ensure a proper representation of the population. All data is collected via face-to-face interviews.

The wide scope of our questionnaire creates a rich data set supporting extensive analysis. The BACSI is computed from dozens of questions covering various variables affecting a consumer's consumption sentiment. Diffusion values (representing the positive bias in responses) are computed for each question. The index then is computed from the ratio between weighted diffusion value sums of the current and base surveys. The weights are based on the importance of each variable.
